Let’s be honest—scuba diving is one of the coolest things you can do, but no one gets it perfect every time. And that’sokay! We’ve all had those moments underwater when we think, “I probably looked ridiculous just now.” Whether it’s bouncing off the sandy bottom like a pinball or getting completely lost while trying to “navigate,” it’s all part of the learning curve.
But here’s the thing—diving is all about progression. If you have spent any time around the sport, you know that the Advanced Open Water certification is a big milestone, but it’s not the finish line. It’s more like the starting point. If you are even remotely aware, you know this is where you begin to realize just how much more there is to master.
That’s what inspired me to put this roast together: to celebrate the funny moments, keep things light, and most importantly encourage every diver to keep growing and improving.

Oh, Advanced Open Water Divers—the proud owners of a certification card that basically says, “I’ve dived five more times than the guy with the basic card.” Let’s take a deep dive into this:
They hear "Advanced" and suddenly think they’re Jacques Cousteau, even though they still can’t put their mask on without fogging it up like a cheap bathroom mirror.
These are the divers who think their navigation skills are solid because they swam in a straight(ish) line for 30 feet once—only to turn around and get lost trying to find where we parked the boat.
Night dives? Sure, they’ve done it. But only with a flashlight bright enough to signal the International Space Station—and even then they’re still scared of that shadow behind the coral.
They’ll tell you they’re certified for deep dives, but the second they hit 100 ft, they’re staring at their SPG like it’swritten in ancient hieroglyphs, and if they are lucky enough to tell you how much air is in there you better believe its time to head back to the boat, they are LOW ON AIR!!!
Buoyancy control? Oh, please. They’re either bouncing off the bottom like a hyperactive toddler or rocketing to the surface faster than a freshly popped cork.
Every Advanced Open Water Diver has that one logbook entry that says “WRECK DIVE!!!” because they swam past a rusty anchor.
They’re super proud of their underwater photography skills—too bad every picture they take is either blurry, overexposed or 80% of their buddy’s fins.
And let’s not forget their “boat etiquette”—they’re always the ones who can’t figure out which way to put their tank in the rack, holding up the entire group.
But hey, they’ve got enthusiasm—and at least they’re not Rescue Divers yet, out here pretending they can save someone when they can’t even save their own dive computer from timing out. 😏
As a scuba instructor and travel guide, I’ve seen it all—enthusiastic new divers, seasoned pros, and, of course, the infamous “Advanced Open Water Diver” with... let’s say, room for improvement. 😂
This roast isn’t just for laughs (though we all need those). It’s a lighthearted way to remind divers that scuba is a journey of constant learning. If you see yourself in any of these hilarious truths, don’t worry—you’re not alone! The best part of scuba diving is that there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s improving your buoyancy, mastering navigation, or getting comfortable with deeper dives.
If you’re ready to level up your skills (and avoid being the punchline on the next dive trip), let’s make a plan!
