Understanding Certification Levels: What Do You Really Need?

Over my 20 years in the SCUBA industry, one thing that has always stuck out to me as confusing is someone looking to get into the sport of diving. "Where do I get started?" and "What do I ACTUALLY need?"

So, I put this together to hopefully spell that out for you and let you know that you are not alone if you are confused by it all.

The Certification Jungle

Have you ever stared at a dive shop’s list of courses and thought, “Do I really need a specialty in underwater basket weaving?” Relax—you’re not alone! Navigating the world of scuba certifications can feel like choosing between 47 flavors of ice cream when all you wanted was chocolate(or in my case Coconut, 😎YUM🥥).

But here’s the good news: I'm here to help you navigat through the options and figure out what certification you ACTUALLY need to unlock the adventures of your dreams.

Certifications: The Building Blocks of Your New Favorite Hobby

Each scuba certification is like unlocking levels in a video game. Each one gives you cooler tools and opens the door to new, exciting underwater experiences. Want to explore a shipwreck at 100 feet? There’s a cert for that. Want to float like a jellyfish instead of a confused seal? Yep, there’s a cert for that too. The trick is to know which ones you'll need to build your passport to Dive Freedom—and which ones you can skip.

Core Certifications: Your Passport to Dive Freedom

Let’s start with the essentials. These are the certifications every diver needs to build a strong foundation:

Open Water Diver: Your Golden Ticket to the Ocean

This is the “Welcome to the Ocean Club” card. With an Open Water Diver certification, you can dive to a depth of 60 feet (18 meters), explore reefs, and buddy up with fellow divers. This is your Ticket to the Show! It’s also where you’ll likely encounter your first underwater selfie moment with a turtle photobombing in the background.

Advanced Open Water Diver: Your First Big Adventure

Ready to level up? Advanced Open Water (AOW) is like scuba’s version of a multi-destination road trip. This course lets you go deeper (literally—up to 100 feet!) and introduces you to specialty dives like night diving, wreck diving, and navigation. Now different training agencies( Dive Schools) have different maps and paths to achieving AOW, but this is where I strongly urge most divers to strive to get to. This shows the dive staff at your various dive shops around the world that you have a bit of experience and that you are not a total guppy who needs their hands held.

With the right training, your safety stops can feel effortless—even while managing extra gear like cameras and a surface marker buoy. Stay calm, stay confident, and enjoy the break.

Specialty Courses: Pick Your Adventure

Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to tailor your scuba skills to match your interests. Think of specialties as a sushi menu—you don’t need everything, just the ones that make your mouth water.

Popular Specialties:

There are so many it is hard to list and I am sure I will break them all down further for you in the coming months.

  • Wreck Diving: Become an underwater Indiana Jones as you explore sunken ships, planes, and even trains (yes, they’re down there!).

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy: Float like a jellyfish instead of bouncing around like a beach ball.

  • Nitrox (Enriched Air): Extend your bottom time and spend less time on the surface sipping water and wishing you were still diving.

  • Underwater Photography: Because “pics or it didn’t happen” applies underwater too. But most importantly with this one, we really want to minimize our effect on the environment and learn how to take pictures UNDER CONTROL. Smashing into the reef to take a blurry picture of an eel? Not cool buddy... Not cool.

Going Pro: For the Dive Junkies

This is for you if you’ve caught the scuba bug and want more responsibility (and possibly a paycheck)

Rescue Diver: The Superhero Certification

This course turns you into the calm, collected diver who knows what to do in a pinch. Think of it as the scuba equivalent of CPR training—super important and oddly satisfying to master. Sadly so many people get out of diving once certified because they were never truly comfortable going without the watchful eye of the Boat Captain or their Divemaster. This is a great program for teaching you how to stay calm and help a fellow diver in need, or even better, recognize signs of stress and correct the issue before a rescue is required.

Divemaster: The Jedi Knight of Diving

This is the first professional level in scuba. You’ll lead dives, mentor new divers, and spend your days underwater (aka living the dream). It is a commitment, but if you’re serious about diving, this one is for you.

How to Choose Your Dive Path

Not sure which certifications to pursue? Start by asking yourself these fun questions:

“Do I dream of exploring wrecks, caves, or reefs?”

“Am I here for the adrenaline, the underwater wildlife, or just some amazing Instagram content?”

"Am I chasing certifications just because?"

“Can I see myself running a dive shop in paradise, or am I just collecting vacation bragging rights?”

Pro Tip: Create a “Dive Bucket List” to keep it fun and personal. Want to dive with hammerhead sharks? Fascinated by underwater lava formations? You can do all of these things and with the help of a good Scuba Travel Advisor (I KNOW ONE 😉), you can make sure that you understand what training and certifications you should receive to enjoy this type of diving safely.

Busting Myths About Dive Certifications:

Myth: “You need every specialty to be a ‘real’ diver.”

Reality: You only need what makes YOU happy (and safe). Nobody’s checking if you’ve mastered underwater hula hooping when you arrive on your Liveaboard.

Myth: “If I stop diving, I’ll forget everything.”

Reality: Once you are certified as an Open Water Diver you are certified for life. It truly is like riding a bike—but if it has been a while a Refresher is always an option to knock the rust off.

Tips for Finding the Right Instructor (or Dive Yoda)

Not all dive instructors are created equal. I have seen Great ones, good ones, and even some that are not so good. So my suggestion to you is to look for one who makes you laugh and makes you feel safe. Not because they do everything for you, Safe because they teach you how to do it yourself and help you build confidence and quality skills.
